Net Zero Trend: A Driving Force for Sustainable Economic Development
10/01/2025

Net Zero Trend and Its Importance for Sustainable Development
The Net Zero trend has emerged as a top priority in addressing climate change, protecting the planet, and ensuring sustainable development. According to scientists, to prevent severe climate change consequences, global temperature rise must be limited to no more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Currently, Earth is already about 1.1°C warmer than the late 19th century, while greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase.
To meet this goal, global emissions must be reduced by 45% by 2030 and achieve Net Zero by 2050. Net Zero involves not only reducing emissions but also reabsorbing remaining emissions through natural solutions like forests and oceans or advanced technologies. Achieving this requires rapid changes across all sectors, including energy, transportation, manufacturing, services, and construction. Net Zero-oriented factories are a critical part of this strategy, optimizing production efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.

Vietnam’s Net Zero Strategy: From Commitment to Action
In Vietnam, the Net Zero trend has become a strategic necessity for transitioning the economy from "brown" to "green." Following strong commitments at COP26 (2021) and COP28 (2023), Vietnam has implemented concrete policies and actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, accelerate energy transitions, and aim for Net Zero by 2050.
Amid global efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, Vietnam has become a prime destination for FDI while demonstrating its commitment through the development of green industrial clusters and Net Zero-oriented production models.

Promoting Green Industry: Vietnam’s Path to Net Zero
Green industry has become indispensable in Vietnam’s pursuit of Net Zero by 2050. The National Green Growth Strategy (2021–2030) with a vision for 2050 highlights green growth as a key driver of sustainable socio-economic development.
At a recent green development forum, representatives from the Ministry of Planning and Investment emphasized prioritizing green projects and businesses with special incentive mechanisms while finalizing national green standards. Pioneering companies in low-emission technologies, carbon storage, or Net Zero factory models will benefit from tax exemptions, preferential interest rates, and streamlined investment procedures.
Currently, Vietnam has about 563 industrial zones, with 292 in operation. However, the proportion of Net Zero or green-certified factories remains limited. By 2030, the Ministry of Planning and Investment aims for 40-50% of provinces to transition existing industrial zones to eco-industrial parks, and 8-10% to develop new eco-industrial parks. This foundation is expected to drive green transformation, reduce emissions, and boost long-term economic efficiency.
